2. Something I’m Excited About

I just finished my interview with Miranda, the academic journal for the Université de Toulouse - Jean Jaures, and I can’t wait to see my segment soon in Ariel’s Corner! We spoke about the relationships between music, literature, and dance, as well as Three Ballerinas: A Moving Sketch and my performance in France at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Conference.

I’ll share once it’s released!

3. Something I’m Dabbling In

Grace Kurosaka and I have been busy designing Alabama Ghost Stories and this will be both of our first times dabbling in SET DESIGN! Yippeee! It’s been so exciting crafting this special project with Grace! We can’t wait to share it on October 18!

4. Something I’m Inspired By

I feel like when I’m running on empty creatively, checking in with Florence always restarts my heart. This duet is GORGEOUS and can we talk about that dreamy outdoor theater?! I’d love to dance my little heart out there. Field Trip?!

Also: Florence’s website is giving me ideas…..

Ten Things Tuesday

  1. Something I Love

This article about art institutions and ideology: read it here

As I begin my master’s degree studies in Cultural Heritage Management TOMORROW (eek so excited), I love seeing these kinds of discussions opening up and making me think... I have always been a museum and culture lover, but it’s beyond a rainy afternoon thing to do. It can be an effective way we shape, experience, and document our humanity. Museums rock, y’all!

2. Something I’m Listening To

3. Something I’ve Got Going on

Alabama Ghost Stories, Jellybean Dance Collective’s second theater show is coming up quickly!! On October 18, come on over to The Dance Foundation and see this installment of the Sweet Home Storytelling Dance Series

4. Something That Inspires Me

Greta Thunberg is a glorious, strong, young voice in Climate Change activism. She’s currently in the U.S. for the United Nations Climate Action Summit. Apart from any sway this could have to be made into a bipartisan issue instead of a human issue, it simply inspires me that amidst difficulties and obstacles, she at sixteen is able to speak so boldly about something she is convicted about (whatever that may be.)

"I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, OCD and selective mutism," she told a crowd gathered for a 2018 TED Talk in Stockholm. "That basically means I only speak when I think it's necessary. Now is one of those moments."

NPR says: “The teenager has a knack for making the complicated issue of climate change sound simple. For that she credits being on the autism spectrum, calling it a gift because it helps her see issues more starkly.”

She also just collaborated with one of my favorite music groups, The 1975, on a song/ spoken piece for their upcoming album. “Songs can’t change the world, but they can change minds.” The Guardian said.

5. Something I’m Excited About

My guy F. Scott’s B-day is coming up on September 24!!!

To celebrate his life and legacy, on September 21 at the Fitzgerald Museum in Montgomery, I will be hosting a Charleston Class! No partner or prior experience is required, and we will have so much fun learning the history, context, and movement of this roaring 20s phenomenon!

It is a $5, 45 minute class and you can reserve your spot here

6. Something I’m Looking Forward To

My debut with Whitney Renfroe’s new contemporary dance company is on September 13 in the show, Permanence!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot wait to perform with such a marvelous, talented cast and I am one lucky girl to get to partner with the INCREDIBLE Brandon Mitchell in a thought-provoking pas de deux. RSVP on Facebook and GRAB YOUR TICKETS ASAP. We’re expecting to sell out!!!

7. Something I Want to Know More About

So one of my greatest fears aside from disappointing people, having no direction/purpose, being mediocre, and being misunderstood is BLACK HOLES!!!!!!!! I’m terrified of black holes and I saw this exhibit in the Museum of Natural History in New York once that shook me to my core and solidified that I’m just a fradey cat for black holes and unexplainable phenomenon in the universe. So… now cue my little brother Kendall explaining in great detail how he watched the Netflix documentary, NOVA: Black Hole Apocalypse.

It chilled me to the bone to think about, but then I started imagining that maybe if I knew more about black holes and understood them, I’d be less afraid. However, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Every new factoid I acquire, I only find out something more terrifying.

8. Something I Need To Do

Well, I’ve got a wedding coming up and I’m so excited!!! However, I’ve been DREADING planning anything or making any substantial moves toward solidifying any details about the big day except knowing who I’m going to be marrying. haha

I am now, only 9ish months away from the wedding, so I need to kick it into high gear because this year’s about to get crazy and I won’t have time to plan as I’m imagining.

I’m thinking my next big step needs to be my wedding dress right?

I watched Steel Magnolias the other day and I just cried my little southern eyes out. I love that movie, and Julia Roberts was an absolute dream in her Southern wedding. I think she was on to something with the wedding colors blush and bashful. ;)

But, it also made me really excited to create a day for myself, my fiancé, and our friends and family to celebrate love in all its forms. I think this was a big turning point and now I’m not dreading planning so much.

9. Something I’m Reading

I just finished Beautiful Fools by R. Clifton Spargo and ahhhh it was stunningly beautiful. It was an easy, indulgent summer read. Get it here on Amazon or reach out to me and I’ll let you borrow my copy.

Now, I’m doing some research for Alabama Ghost Stories, by diving in to Kathryn Tucker Windham’s 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey. It’s definitely putting me in the Halloween Spirit.

10. Something That Changed

My little brother, Kendall, is following his dreams and got a contract with a dance company in Boston!!! This past weekend, we moved him in to his apartment and now he’s off on his great adventure! I am so proud of him and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for his talents and willingness. I’m excited to see him pushing forward in pursuit of what’s on his heart, and this is incredibly inspiring to me.

Five Things Friday

  1. Something I Love

I love this article about arts integration and how it makes other subjects come alive. In the article, it says art is INTEGRAL not extra and I couldn’t agree more. A mission I had when creating Jellybean Dance Collective was to use dance, movement, and composition to help elevate other subjects like history and literature.

2. Something I’m Looking Forward To

I’m headed to Haiti on Monday with Project Grace to dance with and love on the community of Montrouis! I always feel most “me” and most purposeful, happy, and meaningful when I’m in Haiti. I can’t wait to reconnect with those beautiful souls!

3. Something I Am Listening To

4. Something I’ve Got Going On

I am very excited to announce Jellybean Dance Collective’s next show, Alabama Ghost Stories happening on October 18 at The Dance Foundation.

“Alabama Ghost Stories will combine the Southern oral storytelling tradition with movement and dance for a unique audience experience of Alabama folklore. This performance will explore classic tales as well as the universal theme of how this Deep South state relates to its past.”

5. Something I’m Inspired By

I truly love the entire visual direction of euphoria from makeup to costuming to lighting, and I’m definitely inspired by their use of color to convey emotion. The entire soundtrack/ score is absolutely beautiful and captures the essence of the characters and places them in the present so well. If you haven’t heard Labrinth’s work, definitely give it a listen! Also, Zendaya and Hunter Schafer… true icons of this generation.

Way Too Long Since I've Updated This Thing, Wednesday

Well, I’ve missed QUITE A FEW Five Things Friday in the whirlwind of the past month! We’ve had a full blown theater show, and traveled to France for the F. Scott Fitzgerald Society Conference. Now, I’ve hopped on another plane and arrived in Orlando for some more dancing!

  1. Something I Love

I don’t want to be too broad and say FRANCE, but wow, I just absolutely loved every last bit of my first trip to France. It was beyond my wildest dreams, and I could not believe as I was walking down the Seine that THIS is my real life. When I was just a little girl, I watched Madeline, dreaming of Paris… And here I was so full of happiness and life in the middle of Paris!

It was an absolute fantasy getting to perform internationally for the very first time in this beautiful place at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Conference. I never dreamed that I could find a way to combine all my passions - and here it was, a real testament that all the different lives I imagined for myself culminated in this experience.

I loved getting to hear from BRILLIANT Fitzgerald scholars doing such important work, but my favorite was a panel by Meryl Cates on Zelda and her love for ballet. It was just marvelous, and inspired me so much to continue forging my own path in dance scholarship and research on Zelda Fitzgerald.

I loved French food, lazy mornings, cappuccinos, croissants, evenings on the river, architecture, museums, art, and inspiration in the air.

This was also the first international trip I was able to take with my fiancé, Ben. It was incredible to have him there to experience all of these things with and share with him this huge part of myself that awakens when I travel. It was also exceptionally nice to have his support in the audience as I embarked on such an exciting, but nerve-wracking journey into the future I imagined for myself as I presented my research on Zelda Fitzgerald. I loved getting to celebrate this season of life with him.

La Vie En Rose

2. Something I’m Inspired By

My students have worked so hard this year, and today, we arrive for National Dance Honors in Orlando, Florida. They’ve grown so much as little humans and mature artists. I am so excited to see their hard work on stage.

3. Something I’ve Got Going On

Well, my soul’s a stirring! I’m working on an interview with Nathalie Vincent-Arnaud for the academic journal Miranda. We crossed paths at The Université Toulouse Jean Jaurés during the F. Scott Fitzgerald Society Conference. I can’t wait to share the interview with you!

4. Something I’m Looking Forward To

It’s coming up soon, but Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald would be turning 119 on July 24! She once said that she dreamed of “Utopias where it’s always July the 24th 1935 in the middle of summer forever.” On her birthday, we’re cooking up a party with the Fitzgerald Museum!

5. Something I’m Listening To

I. LOVE. BON. IVER. So naturally, I was very excited to hear this song. Listen, and let your ears sigh.

Five Things Friday

  1. Something I Love

It is not often that my entire family is in one place, and any chance we get to enjoy some time together is so precious. We’ve taken the past week as a family to relax and enjoy the city of Las Vegas, and it’s been an absolutely marvelous time. The weather has been beyond perfect, and we even got a little sprinkle of rain here in the desert! We’ve seen a show, pigged out at a famous Las Vegas buffet, gone to the Marvel station and experience, explored, and just loved our time together. I will treasure these memories forever.

2. Something I’m Inspired By

I am just in awe of the sheer talent and artistry of the brilliant Sabina Vafina. She is truly a force of nature and I am still speechless on what she was able to create for my little dance collective. I cannot begin to tell you how much I valued our collaboration and I am honored to have been a part of her canvas. She is… wow. She just amazes me. Here is a photo that she did for us in a patch of heaven down some back roads in North Alabama.

This pose is inspired by a strong woman from Alabama, Zelda Fitzgerald - taken from her sketch Three Ballerinas. The Jellybean Dance Collective is performing our interpretation of Zelda Fitzgerald’s sketch on June 8 at The Dance Foundation. Come on out, y’all!

3. Something I’ve Got Going On

I was absolutely honored to be featured on People of Alabama, a project of the Alabama 200 organization that shares the stories of our Sweet Home state. It is such a lovely platform to share and listen to the people around you and learn so much about the world we inhabit. Read my story on People of Alabama’s Instagram and Facebook or catch it in Sunday’s Birmingham, Mobile, and Huntsville newspapers.
